AR whilst school is closed
27 March 2020
Please find attached a great new development in the use of AR whilst school is closed!
Happy Reading :)
Dear Parent or Guardian
There are three more exciting things you and your child can do with regards to reading during the school closure period and holidays:
Access over 7,000 books and magazines through a website called ‘myOn’ which is hosted by Renaissance, the software company that produces Accelerated Reader (this has been made available for the school closure period only)
Take quizzes on the same ‘Accelerated Reader’ system we use in school
For parents; access ‘HomeConnect’ which can show you what your child has quizzed on in the past and their progress etc. when you register with this system, it can notify you of when your child has taken a quiz (even when they return to school!)
Let’s have a look at all three:
myOn: Reading does not have to stop during the closure of schools! To help give availability to thousands of digital books and articles that your child can read, click on the following link
and then click on the orange Start Reading button. From there you can search by category or enter a specific book title. Hover your mouse over the book you want to read and either click the blue ‘Info’ button for more details about the book or the on the green ‘Read’ button to start reading
Want to see if it the book has a quiz? Go to https://www.arbookfind.co.uk/usertype.aspx? select Student and search using the title or author of the book (you can also check to see if any books you have at home are on AR too! If your child is not using AR and taking quizzes yet, you can still use this site to read lots of books with your child!
Taking a quiz: your child can take their reading quizzes (AR, Vocabulary and Literacy Skills) at home! Click on
Children will recognise the blue screen that will then appear!
Under the Student login screen:
User Name: ***** (initials&reader number – the same when logging on at school: first letter of your child’s first name and first letter of surname and their 3 or 4 digit number they use when borrowing a book from our Library)
Don’t worry about printing out Tops Reports because you will be able to see them all using HomeConnect.
We use a software program called Renaissance Place at school. This program has a special feature called Renaissance HomeConnect, which you and your child can access outside of school from any computer with an Internet connection. Renaissance HomeConnect is fun and easy to use. It allows us, yourself and your child to share information about their progress in Accelerated Reader. You can log in to Renaissance HomeConnect from any computer with an Internet connection and compatible browser. For a list of compatible browsers, type the following URL in any browser: http://support.renlearn.com/techkb/techkb/10624292e.asp
To log in to Renaissance Home Connect Website: https://UKHOSTED1.renlearn.co.uk/2030762/HomeConnect
If you'd like to receive emails showing your student's quiz or test results, click the Email Setup link in Renaissance HomeConnect and follow the directions. To be sure these emails reach your inbox, add firstname.lastname@example.org to your address book.
Phew! I appreciate this is a lot of information for you, however, we want to encourage your child to carry on with their reading journey during this time. If you have questions (from username details to book information to any of the three sites mentioned above), please do not hesitate to email me via email@example.com and I will endeavour to reply to your queries.
In the meantime, stay safe and, of course, Happy Reading, from Mrs Whyte
