Autumn 2 2022
In English this half term, we will be studying the text Farther and then writing our own historical narrative and explanation text. In Guided Reading, we will be continuing to read 'Goodnight Mister Tom'; the children have loved reading this so far and we can't wait to find out what happens at the end of the book! In Maths, we will be starting with lots of number work by looking at fractions and decimals and then moving on to measure which will include length, area and perimeter.
Our humanities focus continues to be history but now we will be focusing on the Second World War. The children were fully immersed in their learning about the First World War last half term so we are really looking forward to continuing this topic and answering our question 'What impact did the World Wars have on Britain and March?' Our Art this half term will be linked to our history topic where we will be creating our own spitfires to help us answer the question 'How do artists develop their ideas into sculptures?'
In Science we will learning about why our heart beats and how we can keep ourselves healthy. There will be an exciting opportunity for the children to take part in a heart dissection if they want, with a different activity available for those who are a bit squeamish!
We will continue to have outdoor PE on a Monday and swimming on a Friday with the last session of this being on Friday 2nd December.
Autumn 1 2022
This half term in Year 6, our topic focus is History, where we will be focussing on the World Wars and answering the question ‘What impact did the World Wars have on Britain and March?’ We have booked a visit to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford and know the children are looking forward to the experience. Our DT will link with this and we will be designing our own security warning systems for a trench.
In English, we will be using ‘Private Peaceful’ by Michael Morpurgo to write a narrative and will be studying a number of war poets. In Maths, we are focussing on securing our knowledge of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Year 6 PE will be Swimming on a Friday and outdoor PE on a Monday.
Summer 1 2022
This half term in Year 6, our topic focus is Geography, where we will be travelling to the far ends of the Earth and answering the question ‘What are the Polar Regions and are they in danger?’ Linking this with our Science and English lessons, we will be looking at exploration research, and finding out why we can see the Northern Lights. This week we were able to see a simulation of them on the ceiling of our classrooms, which was a great introduction to the topic.
In English, we will be using ‘Shackleton’s journey’ to write an non-chronological report and a newspaper article based on his expedition. In Maths, we are really focussing on Arithmetic, the four operations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division) and preparing ourselves for the SATs coming up in May. All of the children are ready for this challenge and we can’t wait for them to show how hard they have worked this year!
Year 6 will continue with indoor PE on a Tuesday and outdoor PE on a Friday.
Spring 2 2022 Update
Our topic focus for this half term is History, where we will be studying slavery and asking ‘Has slavery been abolished?’ In English, we will be writing a persuasive letter and a speech based on our book ‘Henry’s Freedom Box’. During Maths lesson, we will be looking at measure (area and perimeter) and revising learning from all of Key Stage 2 in preparation for SATs in May.
We are focussing on keeping ourselves healthy, both mentally and physically in PSHCE. Year 6 will continue to do indoor PE on a Tuesday (gymnastics) and outdoor PE on a Friday (tennis). Please note the change from Wednesdays to Fridays.
